Rescue Animals Sri Lanka (New)

Street or Community dogs are a heartbreaking sight on the streets of Sri Lanka- loved by some, hated by others. At present, due to the complete failure of the government sterilizing programmes, the number of dogs on the roads have multiplied greatly, giving rise to much consternation on the part of the public, as well as the animal welfare activists.  A ´magic´ solution is the desired outcome by both the government, as well as the public, to the growing number of street animals resulting in the removal of dogs from the streets and other public places. Sadly, it is the poor animals that bear the brunt of the governments failed duty regarding the approved CNVR (Catch, Neuter/Sterilise, Vaccinate, Return to the original habitat) Programme. These poor animals, through no fault of their own, find themselves continuously victimized and treated in the most cruel and inhumane manner. Similarly wildlife be it monkeys, peacocks, elephants, etc  are victimized, once again due to ad hoc cultivation, re location of villagers, illicit felling of forest areas; in short human failures which result in cruelty toward animals through no fault of their own.

Our Story

Anusha was 6 years old when she first rescued two, tiny flea-ridden street pups that she came across on her way to school, and subsequently managed to smuggle into the classroom resulting in her first visit to the principal’s office! Her love for animals stems from her late father, who adored all creatures great and small, resulting in Anusha growing up surrounded by birds, cattle, goats, chicken, dogs, and cats- all of which she lovingly named and cared for at various stages of her life.  Loving and caring for downtrodden animals always came naturally, in fact, the ugliest of them were the ones that pulled strongest on Anusha´s heartstrings. Her father, being her role model, set a strong foundation for her love and compassion towards all needy animals.  At present, she has over 100 dogs, of whom 4 are blind, 3 crippled and 5 are three-legged,  as well as 40 + cats.

Anusha was awarded the prestigious Elizabeth Lewyt Award for her diligent and tireless work during the Tsunami in 2004, during which she was selected by HSI (Humane Society International) as a partner to help with the tsunami stricken animals in the country. Shortly after, Anusha was awarded the highly coveted grant by The Marching Trust of the UK for her work with street animals in Sri Lanka. In 2005, Rescue Animals Sri Lanka was established with the reputed legal firm DL&F de Saram to formalize her work with street animals.
